University of Florida Research and Engineering Education Facility
Shalimar, FL
The University of Florida Research and
Engineering Education Facility may be alone
right now, sitting on a large parcel of land
outside Eglin Air Force Base in Northwest
Florida. But over the next few years it will
likely be joined by other research operations as
plans progress to create a research campus
around the REEF that will focus on creating
advanced aerial weapons for the U.S. Air Force.

Overview: Formerly the University of Florida
Graduate Engineering Research Center, it was
created in 1969 to provide engineering research and
education in support of Eglin Air Force Base and
the surrounding technology community. It offers
advanced degree programs and courses in
mechanical, aerospace, electrical, computer,
industrial and systems engineering. REEF partners
with the
Air Force Research Laboratory/Munitions
Directorate. Among other things, it has three
research units:
Research Institute for Autonomous
Precision Guided Systems (RIAPGS), International
Center for Applied Computational Mechanics and
the
Florida Institute for Research into Energetics
(FIRE).

Technical expertise/research fields:
computational energetics, computational mechanics,
unsteady aerodynamics, fluid mechanics,
aeroacoustics, fluid-structural interactions,
experimental mechanics, vision-based control, high
speed flight aerodynamics, flight vehicle stability
and control, materials research, high strain rate
physics, quality and reliability engineering, test and
evaluation

Facilities/equipment: Includes materials lab,
wind tunnels, visualization lab
