J-2X
rocket engine
Overview: The J-2, America's largest production
liquid hydrogen fueled rocket engine before the
Space Shuttle main engines, is being revived in
support of NASA's Space Launch System program.
Multiple J-2 engines were used in the Saturn V
rocket, and the new variant is the J-2X. One J-2X
engine will be used for the Earth Departure Stage -
the upper stage of the Ares V. NASA also will use
the J-2X engine for the second stage of the Ares I.

Corridor work: The J-2X is tested at John C.
Stennis Space Center, MS
