Overview: This is the home base of the U.S. Air
Force Special Operations Command, which is
responsible for the air element of the nation's
unconventional warfare organizations. The base
also includes a special ops school and joint special
operations university.

Location: west of Mary Esther, FL

Established: as part of Eglin in the 1940s

Size: 6,634 acres

Mission: Hurlburt Field, originally designated
Auxiliary Field No. 9, is part of the greater Eglin
Air Force Base reservation. It’s the headquarters of
the Air Force Special Operations Command. It’s
also the home of the operational 1st Special
Operations Wing and the USAF Special
Operations School, which trains Air Force, Army,
Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and government
civilian personnel in a variety of course.

Other units: Hurlburt also includes the Air
Education and Training Command’s 505th
Command and Control Wing and the Joint Special
Operations University.
