Background: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana
and Mississippi are known for their
hospitality, beaches, good food and fun times.
But underlying that veneer is a strong,
diversified economic base of aerospace,
shipbuilding, manufacturing, import/export
centers, oil and gas exploration and refining,
military operations and other supporting
industries. In September 1999, more than 150
business leaders from the Baton Rouge,
Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mobile, New Orleans
and Pensacola regions gathered to consider
issues for economic development along the
North Central Gulf Coast. They discovered
through the Gulf Coast Issues Conference
that they shared a lot of the same concerns.
Subsequent meetings examined key areas,
such as transportation, the environment,
legislative affairs and various elements of
economic development. The Gulf Coast
Issues Conference evolved into the Gulf
Coast Regional Chamber Coalition.
